Day 13: Christmas Wish

I’ve been pretty introspective  over the past couple of weeks. I don’t know about you guys, but the introvert in me needs time sometimes to process in order to grow and change. I find that some of the best ‘eureka’ moments about myself or about those around me have happened by myself, at the most with one other person, just spending time quietly in prayer, talking through things, and just generally reflecting.

It’s funny, even though I’ve been blogging about Christmas for almost two weeks now, I’ve been having a hard time remembering that Christmas is so close. Normally, I start listening to Christmas carols in mid-late November and have watched at least one Christmas movie by the first week of December. I remember loving gathering as a family, sitting around the advent wreath, reading the Christmas story, praying for others as a family. I’ve been so incredibly blessed by a family that took Christmas seriously, the true meaning of Christmas. I’ve missed this the past couple of years as I’ve been at University in the months leading up to Christmas, and I’m realizing that I need to make Christmas my own, and make time for what’s important, instead of being so incredibly busy and distracted.

So that’s my wish this Christmas, that we would focus on what’s important and make Christmas about Christ, slowing down and making time for others. I’ve started the process with hundreds of other men and women around the world doing Dressember this month, and I’m on the hunt for more ways to bless others and also take the time relearning the amazing true story of Christ’s birth and life.

Prayer: I challenge you to spend some time with me in prayer this Christmas, instead of being so distracted by the business of the season, either by work, or by school, family…etc. Focus on the truth, and allow yourself to be awestruck by Christ’s miraculous birth. Because at the end of the day, I think that’s what’s pretty important.

Day 12: Christmas Movies

Ok, I know that this is a hotly debated topic, and I know that everybody has a different opinion about their favourite Christmas movies. That’s not why I’m writing about them today, although I would love to hear from you all about your favourites and why. I just thought I’d compile a list of what I would consider a must-watch. The main reason I’m doing this is because I was talking with a dear friend of mine who had no idea what I talking about when I mentioned a few of them. To say I was shocked would be putting it lightly. I seriously wonder how she grew up without any knowledge of some of the amazing, feel-good movies that are out there that need to be enjoyed during this time of year.

  1. White Christmas: If you love some of the old classic Christmas music with Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and company, you’ll love this movie. First off, it stars Bing Crosby and has Danny Kaye… It’s just such a feel good movie, with amazing music and dance numbers.
  2. It’s a Wonderful Life: Another classic with James Stewart about a man named George Bailey who feels like everybody he cares about would be better off if he were never born. An angel is sent to George to show him what the world would be like if he had never been born.
  3. Elf: This is pretty much the only movie with Will Ferrell that I like. It’s the story of a baby who stows away in Santa’s bag and grows up in the North Pole with Papa Elf. Buddy the Elf is sent to find his real dad in New York City and struggles to fit in with other humans.
  4. A Charlie Brown Christmas: Charlie Brown is having a hard time getting into the Christmas spirit, and his friends work to help him celebrate Christmas. Linus’s speech about the true meaning Christmas is my favorite because he recites the Bible story, and it’s beautiful.

A few other honorable mentions are Arthur Christmas, Holiday Engagement, Miracle on 34th Street.

What are your favorite Christmas movies?

Day 11: Christmas ‘Show’

One of the things that I love about celebrating the Christmas season with each other is the fact that many churches put on some sort of play/show/pageant…etc. I hate calling these nights ‘Christmas shows’ because I think it should be and often is so much more than that. But I don’t know what else would be a good word for these nights. And maybe it’s because of my years growing up and being a part of shows like these, I always love to go. Just gonna be honest, it is a huge dream of mine to sing a Christmas solo at a Christmas service some time. I’ve been thinking about joining a worship team again, because I miss it so much!

Often, the story of Christ is told in song/play form.  I leave those times pretty quiet and pensive. I love taking time to process and think through the story of Christ. It’s the same if I go anywhere with a really great speaker, you gotta give me a bit or so before I can goof off and just hang out, because the introvert in me has got to process what was just said. It’s a bit of a panic moment when someone asks me a question right from leaving something like this, because I feel like I’m gonna lose something really important that I was in the middle of thinking about if I respond. It’s a real problem… 😀

Tonight’s Christmas evening at Centre Street Church in Calgary.

Anyway, do you have memories going to Christmas pageants with choirs and orchestras, maybe a play?

Day 10: Long Winter Walks

I went for a long walk today in between classes, and it was the sort of day that was just perfect for it, in my opinion. It was cold and crisp, and I could see my breath. I don’t know about you guys, but I love the sound of my boots crunching in the snow. It was just a time of prayer, loving the fresh air, enjoying the beautiful, snowy day. I was thankful that there wasn’t anyone else on the path, because I may also have been singing Christmas carols…

Day 9: Prayer

I’m having the hardest time trying to put into words what I’m thinking through right now, so bear with me as I ramble a bit. I’ve been learning a lot over this past year of the importance and power of prayer. I hear about prayer a lot in church and you read about it, but often, I’m sad to say, my prayer has consisted of praying for something or someone once and then being done. I’m learning that God doesn’t want us to politely knock on the door and say “pardon me, but would you mind terribly helping me out with this? I won’t bother you again.” I’m learning that God loves spending time in conversation with us, even when we’re praying in frustration or anger. We need to spend time repeatedly, doing battle in prayer. I’m so used to praying for change with the thought that if I don’t see an answer, it must not be God’s will. But I haven’t really prayed with purpose and faith then, either. I’ve noticed lately that I’ve been getting spiritually attacked in a number of different ways, and it just hit me tonight that I haven’t been spending much time fervently on my knees, asking for support and praising my Lord and King.

I love Ephesians 6 where it talks about the armor of God. I’ve had a couple of very real moments in my life where those verses were my lifeline, helping me to consciously protect myself from some of the lies that I was surrounded by. And I love verse 18 that says “praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance.” We are supposed to persevere and pray with persistence? I’m just learning what that looks like, but for me, those moments of prayer in my life have been the coolest because I get to spend that time with my King and see him in action, and be a part of it all.

I’m really thankful for this reminder right now during this campaign that I’m participating in. It’s been a little bit disappointing that I haven’t had anyone support ‘me’ in this campaign, and it can feel like I’m not really making a contribution to the fight against the exploitation and trafficking of women. But I’m being reminded often this week, that I can do battle on my knees for these women. That we have been given power through the Holy Spirit that I have seen in action through prayer. It’s because of this that I refuse to take prayer lightly again.

Question/Prayer: How do you approach prayer? Is it a real conversation? Do you pray, really and truly believing that your prayers are heard and will change things? I would challenge you to think about this, and please take time to pray often for people all over this world that are being trafficked and exploited. Let’s shut this industry down!
